An intervention program for teens

“Working Things out” is a direct intervention program for teens. This evidence-based program is developed in Dublin and came about to provide early intervention to reduce risks of teens with suicidal feelings, self harm behaviours, and other mental health issues. This program is strength focused and incorporates standard CBT theory. The workshop uses group discussion and a special DVD made by young people who have learned how to solve their problems and want to share their experience with other young people. The purposes of the program are to improve the young person's problem solving and coping skills, and promote their ability to communicate about emotions.

Format of Program

  • 1 session of pre-program individual family meeting (involving teen and parents)
  • 6 sessions of 2-hour group work with teens covering topics: solving problems & making good decisions; peer relationship; romantic relationship; family relationship; managing anxiety, anger, stress, depression; dealing with unusual crisis (e.g. parental marital stress, illness, death, etc).
  • 1 session of post-program individual family meeting (involving teen and parents)
