Procedure
-
Client/Parent calls The Counselling Place office, providing information on age (of child) and issues of concerns/reasons for referral. The Counselling Place administrative staff would assist in setting up appointments and answering general enquiries.
-
A 4-hour initial appointment is set up. At least one parent/caregiver (ideally both parents) responsible for primary care of child/adolescent will need to be present for this appointment with the child/adolescent. Psychologist would interview the parent/caregiver, determined appropriate tools for assessment, and answer any specific questions. If at this stage it is determined that no assessment is required, appropriate referral/strategies would be given and the assessment process will terminate. The client is charged regular counseling fee for the consultation session.
-
If it is determined that assessment is required, Psychologist would proceed with assessment of the child/adolescent, which usually include objective (Psychologist’s evaluation) and subjective (parents’/caregiver’s, teacher’s information) components. Child/Adolescent would be given a variety of verbal, physical, and written tasks. Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to prepare the child/adolescent for assessment by informing the child/adolescent of the purpose and forms of the assessment.
-
Depending on the progress of the child/adolescent in completing the required tasks, subsequent appointment(s) may be set up in which only child/adolescent need to be present.
-
Psychologist would start report preparation as soon as the child/adolescent complete all required tasks and all information required (from parents/caregiver or teacher) is received. This will take about 2 weeks.
-
Final appointment set up with parent/caregiver to meet with the Psychologist to receive and discuss report. One original and one copy of the report will be given. Additional original report can be obtained at $50 each.
-
Reevaluation using the same instrument can only be done in 6 months’ time to prevent practice effect.
